Weight Watchers members in Mason City, Clear Lake and Rockwell participated in Weight Watchers’ Lose For Good campaign, Aug. 30 through Oct. 17. Altogether, they lost 1,035 pounds and collected 250 pounds of food, said Jeanene Blickenderfer, Weight Watchers Territory Manager Assistant for Eastern Iowa.
“Their loss was the food bank’s gain,” Blickenderfer said.
Blickenderfer personally donated 37 pounds of non-perishable food to represent the 37 pounds she lost in 2002.
Another woman donated 40 boxes of macaroni and cheese, a food that triggers her to overeat, in honor of the 40 pounds she had lost, Blickenderfer said.
Marcia Grabinski, leader of Clear Lake Weight Watchers, donated 50 food items representing her 50-pound weight loss.
She said her members have asked if they can continue the Lose for Good activity.
“We find that for many of them, their health has benefitted,” Blickenderfer said. “It just makes a real win-win situation.”
Le Neverman, volunteer coordinator for Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank, said the food bank is always in need of food.
“The need the last 12 months has been really high,” he said.
On a national level, for every million pounds lost by Weight Watchers members, Weight Watchers pledged to donate $250,000 to fight hunger, up to $1 million.
It has donated $1 million to two hunger-fighting organizations, Share Our Strength and Action Against Hunger.
Weight Watchers members participating in 3,300 volunteer food drives across the country donated an estimated 2 million pounds of food, Blickenderfer said.
