Former Iowa coach Dr. Tom Davis took in a practice as the Hawkeyes continued preparations for Friday’s 7 p.m. season opener against Charleston Southern.
Davis, who won 269 games in 13 seasons as Iowa’s coach, sat with former Hawkeye Kenyon Murray in the stands as coach Todd Lickliter and his staff put the team through an early-afternoon workout.
Lickliter greeted Davis with a handshake shortly after his arrival and returned to talk with him again on a couple of occasions as Iowa went through drills.
It wasn’t the first conversation between the winningest coach in Hawkeye history and Iowa’s second-year head coach.
Encouraging a connection between the program’s past and its present, Lickliter has extended an open invitation for Davis to attend practice and the long-time coach made the short drive from his Iowa City home for the first time Wednesday.
“It’s great to see him here and be welcomed,” Murray said. “With every successful program, you see former players and coaches actively involved.”
Lickliter and Davis have even discussed a common bond, talking about the enjoyment that goes along with the experience of having sons around them as they coach.
“It’s been such a pleasure to be able to spend time with my son on the court,” Lickliter said, referring to John Lickliter, a freshman walk-on who the coach announced Wednesday will redshirt this season.
“This game takes you in separate ways so often. I don’t think it’s something that any of us take for granted.”
Davis shared the experience when he was at Iowa. His son, Providence coach Keno Davis, was a student coach on Hawkeye teams coached by his father while he was an undergraduate student at Iowa long before the pair worked together at Drake.
“It’s a unique experience and we talked a bit about how he handled it,” Lickliter said. “John wants to do as much as he can to help the team. He wants to be a coach someday and I’m glad to have him around.”
Coach Lickliter’s father, Arlan, was a long-time coach at high school level in Indiana and his maternal grandfather, Les Fox, was a coach and long-time recruiter for Hanover College in Indiana.
“It’s something we all share,” Lickliter said.
