“Do the laundry, clean house and go out and enjoy the restaurants in Mason City,” said Michele Appelgate, public information officer for the city.
“Today is very good news,” City Administrator Brent Trout said. “The (water) samples we sent to Iowa City tested negatively. The water is now good to drink and wash dishes.”
Residents may wash laundry and use the water at full capacity, he said. “We’re a full go.”
Ron Osterholm, director of the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health, said Mason City restaurants are also free to open.
“Our goal is to have every restaurant up and going by noon,” he said.
Restaurants were given the go-ahead to begin their reopening procedures, such as flushing out ice machines and doing dishes, Osterholm said. “It should take less than an hour.”
Health inspectors would be at the restaurants in the next four hours to answer questions, but restaurants did not have to wait for the health inspector to open, Osterholm said.
Restaurant owners were instructed to call the Cerro Gordo County Health Department at 641-421-9300 with any questions.
Damage Assessment Teams will be in northeast Mason City, which was the hardest-hit area in the flooding, Appelgate said.
Mason City architect Tom Hurd, a member of the Damage Assessment Team, said approximately a dozen houses throughout the city had red signs posted on them indicating they had major structural damage and may or may not be worth salvaging.
Many houses were tagged with yellow signs, signifying moderate damage that would involve some major costs to rehabilitate, Hurd said.
Mayor Roger Bang thanked residents of Mason City “for their patience and resiliency.”
He also thanked the city staff and hundreds of volunteers.
“I especially wish to thank our friends in Clear Lake for their help and Albert Lea, who offered police and public works employees.”
The water distribution center at Southport Mall will remain open until 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Appelgate said.
Portable toilets will be removed from around town and transported to other areas of the state.
The Salvation Army was closing most canteens and mobile food units, although food would continue to be distributed at Southport until it was gone, Appelgate said.
The emergency shelter at Clear Lake Middle School will be open for anyone who needs it.
The United Way of North Central Iowa is still coordinating volunteers to help residents in their clean-up efforts. Residents wishing to request volunteer assistance may call the United Way at 641-423-1774.
Anyone needing assistance or having questions may continue to call the Joint Information Center at 641-494-3547 until 8 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
The Joint Information Center will be closed Sunday to give volunteers and other workers a break.
