In game one, Samantha Shoger had three hits and drove in three runs to lead a 14-hit NIACC offensive attack. After Marshalltown took a 3-0 lead, the Trojans tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the second inning as Traci Lerch and Shoger contributed RBI singles and NIACC scored its third tally on an error.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning, with Shoger’s RBI single tying the contest at four-all in the bottom of the frame. In the bottom of the fifth, Shoger gave the Trojans their first lead, drilling a home run to rightfield leading off the inning.
However, the visiting Tigers scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning, with Brooke Ellis breaking a five-all tie with a two-run homer. Ellis had four hits for Marshalltown (27-22 overall, 12-16 in ICCAC play) while Garner-Hayfield alumna Alyssa Eckerman added three hits. Leah Mork, Whitney Bauer, Molly Niedert, Allyson Gross and Lerch had two hits each to support Shoger for NIACC.
In the second game of the day Marshalltown’s Sarah Heeren was too much for NIACC.
Heeren hit a solo homer in the first and ended up going five-for-five with five RBI for the game. Michelle Elliott added a two-run homer in the second. In the bottom of the second, Lerch brought in a pair of runs for the Trojans on a double to make it a 3-2 Tiger lead. NIACC gave up three in the top of the third, giving up three doubles on four hits, and scored zero while on at bat.
While both teams scored two in the fourth, the NIACC defense held firm in the fifth. Niedert and Mork both drove in a run in bottom of the fifth to make it 8-6. But Heeren blew the game open for Marshalltown in the sixth with a three run homer, and the Tigers added one more insurance run in sixth and seventh innings, while shutting the Trojans out to cruise to a 13-6 win.
It was the fifth straight day the Trojans played an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference doubleheader, the last four at home.
The Trojans (17-23 overall, 7-21 in ICCAC) begin the Region XI playoffs in Ft. Dodge with a noon contest against third-seeded Iowa Lakes Community College.
