MASON CITY — Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Kevin Pals alerted residents Wednesday about a scam in which people are being informed by mail that they have won $250,000 in “The Mega Millions Draw” sweepstakes.
A letter, on Capital Direct letterhead, informs them their lucky number was drawn as a result of a sweepstakes ticket they supposedly purchased. Enclosed is a check from GLG Corp. for $4,200, which the letter says has been deducted from their $250,000 winnings to pay for a “tax clearance fee.”
The remainder of their winnings will come through a bank draft, certified check or will be delivered by special courier, according to the letter.
The catch is: The recipient is to pay $3,200 in “taxes” to the company through MoneyGram or Western Union.
“Letters of this nature are frauds. There is no truth to them at all,” said Pals.
“Please do not respond to these types of gimmicks.”

Bridge closure postponed again
ALGONA — Weather has postponed the closure of the U.S. 169 bridge over the Des Moines River in Algona for a second time.
The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Britt construction office has now approved the closure for Monday, weather permitting.
The closure is necessary for the contractor to use the completed side of the bridge as a staging area for equipment used to pour the bridge deck on the unfinished side.
During the expected 10-hour closure, traffic will be detoured east on U.S. 18 to Diagonal Street and back to U.S. 169.
The bridge is expected to be completed in June.
