Sisco, in his first year as coach of the Lady Trojans, guided NIACC to a 10-2 record over its spring break trip to Florida.
Behind effective pitching and timely hitting, the Lady Trojans return to Iowa looking to continue their strong start.
“We feel like we are off to a good start,” Sisco said. “We just want to keep things going. We have been working on improving the things we can control and just trying to get in as many reps as we can.”
Sisco took advantage of both Andrea Aguilar and Traci Lerch while in Florida, as the pair each went 5-1, tossing 12 complete games and allowing just 32 earned runs.
“I thought they both did a good job,” Sisco said. “They are different types of pitchers. We didn’t have to use them both in any game because they did so well, but that is something we can keep in our tool box for later in the year.”
Aguilar, who Sisco describes as a prototypical college pitcher, walked only four batters in 41 innings of work. Lerch, a workman-like thrower, surrendered just four extra-base hits in 40 innings inside the circle.
On offense, Whitney Bauer was NIACC’s most dangerous weapon. The sophomore batted .410 with five stolen bases, 10 RBI, five doubles and 13 runs scored.
“The really good hitters in both baseball and softball spend extra time in the cage,” Sisco said. “Whitney did that and that is why she is such a good hitter.
“She works all the time and it is really paying off. She is a big-time player and somebody is going to get a good one.”
Bauer leads the Lady Trojans across the board in six different statistical categories, remains willing to do whatever is asked of her at the plate.
“She is hitting doubles and getting on base,” Sisco says, “but she is also executing the sacrifices when we need her to.”
Aguilar has proven that she is more than capable with the bat in her hands, belting out 13 hits and driving in eight runners. The freshman also drew nine walks.
In all, NIACC earned 65 free passes during its 12 games, compared to 52 strikeouts as a squad.
“We are not a huge power team, even though we do have a couple of bats that can really drive girls in,” Sisco said. “But we execute very well and are pretty good with on-base percentage. They have bought into doing whatever it takes and that is going to be a big key for us all year long.
“From the top of our lineup down to the bottom, we need to be good at sacrifices and hit and run.”
Molly Niedert has 10 RBI, while Lerch also showed her keen eye by drawing a team-high 10 base on balls.
NIACC’s conference schedule will allow them a first-hand look at a ranked squad, as the Lady Trojans open against No. 7 (Div. II) Iowa Central in Fort Dodge on Wednesday.
“Traditionally, our conference is always good,” Sisco said. “Iowa Central, Kirkwood, Muscatine and Iowa Lakes are the top dogs and they are all off to great starts.
“Now it is time to buckle down because we have to earn respect from those teams.”
