The former Newman Catholic standout and current Drake men’s basketball assistant coach is enjoying the Bulldogs’ rise in the college basketball world.
“The players and coaching staff have always worked hard and to have this type of season goes beyond words,” Ohl said. “I am happy for our seniors because they are fighters who would not stop believing.
“I am happy because we have done this the right way with good kids who have the proper balance between basketball and academics.”
Seniors Adam Emmenecker, Leonard Houston and Klayton Korver led No. 16 Drake to the Missouri Valley Conference tournament title last Sunday.
The Bulldogs whipped Illinois State 79-49 to become the first No. 1 seed to win the Valley tournament title since 1998.
“The team really did a great job of preparing and staying focused,” said Ohl, who graduated from Newman in 1997. “The No. 1 seed had not won the MVC tournament since 1998 and many people thought it would be the same this year.
“Our team seems to enjoy being told they cannot do something and then proving all those people wrong.”
Now, Drake, which is in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1971, must sit and wait for Selection Sunday to find out who it will face in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
So the Bulldogs will be coming off almost a two-week layoff when they finally play their first round game either March 20 or 21.
“We took a couple of days off and will continue to stay on the same schedule that we have used for the last couple of weeks,” Ohl said. “We want our guys to be as fresh as possible so we will continue to do some shooting and light running.
“Our managers will tape every game that is on television and once we find out our opponent the coaching staff will get to work on a game plan.”
Obviously, the Bulldogs have already clinched a spot in the NCAA tournament so there will be no stress on Selection Sunday.
So Drake plans to celebrate the moment.
“Selection Sunday is going to be awesome,” Ohl said. “We are going to celebrate with our fans and the Des Moines community in the Knapp Center and watch the show together.
“It will be a special day for a special group.”
The special group is being led by Keno Davis, who took over for his father Dr. Tom Davis.
Ohl was an assistant for three years under Keno’s father.
“Keno has been terrific in all areas,” Ohl said. “He has taken Dr. Tom’s style and made some slight changes that have put our players in position to be successful.
“From day one he stressed giving a great effort and not getting outworked by our opponents. Our players play with great confidence on offense because Keno wants them to be aggressive.”
