That was when talks began about restoring the buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The clothing store is currently located in the City National Bank, which was designed by Wright.
Owners Scott and Susan Moorman didn’t look far for a new location, though — just across the plaza.
“We’re excited to stay downtown and be in an old building,” Scott said.
The Moormans began looking at the building last spring and construction and restoration began last October.
The building, which was built from area quarry limestone in 1884, is being restored to its original look. It will also include a rented-out apartment above it.
Early work involved removing walls, the drop ceiling and limestone where windows once were.
“The big surprise was when we took the north wall out there was a two-foot-by- one-foot steel beam going through the windows we’re going to put in,” Scott said.
He had to contact engineers on how to remove the beams but still give the wall and windows enough support.
They were successfully removed and the windows were installed this month. The top arched part of the windows should arrive and be installed this month, restoring it to the original look.
When removing the drop ceiling they expected the original tin ceiling to be in poor shape.
“We were very happily surprised the tin was in excellent shape,” Scott said.
The northeast corner of the building has also been restored to its original appearance, Susan said. It was once angled off, became a square corner, but is now angled off once again. It will serve as the main entrance to the store.
During January the drywall and drop ceiling will be installed. The limestone for the outside should arrive this month as well.
The drop ceiling will only be in the back part but will have a tin ceiling like the front part, Scott said.
In February the lighting and plumbing should be complete and fixtures, such as cabinets, will be moved over.
The Moormans hope to move the entire store over the last week in February or first week in March.
“You know there's always the date you say and what will actually happen,” Scott said.
The project won’t be completed by that time though.
New limestone will still need to be added to the outside of the building. It will be washed down and worked to match the old limestone, Scott said.
More work will need to be done on the loft apartment as well.
The Moormans hope to have the project completed by June this year.
