CLEAR LAKE — Storytellers and story lovers will gather in Clear Lake for the 17th annual Iowa Storytelling Festival on Friday and Saturday, July 22-23.
The dynamic and varied group of featured performers includes Bettie Jane Bibler, Neil Salowitz and the mother/daughter storytelling duo of Sadarri and Misty Saskill.
The festival will begin with the Ghost Boat of scary and eerie tales on Friday night, and continue with free storytelling performances throughout the day on Saturday in Clear Lake City Park.
Bibler and Salowitz will perform on the Ghost Boat, and they will be joined by the Saskills for Saturday performances at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Sadarri Saskill and her daughters have performed throughout the country, including at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tenn.
The multi-lingual Sadarri, accompanied by daughter Misty, will share tales from African, Spanish and Haitian/Creole traditions.
Saskill loves to use her stories as a bridge to multi-cultural understanding and to promote character development.
She has been awarded a Parents' Choice award for her recording, "Shake Your ‘Tale' Feathers."
Bettie Jane Bibler of Granger captivates her audiences with a variety of intriguing tales spiced with exotic musical instruments, curious creatures and creative drama.
She has performed at the Des Moines Arts Festival, Living History Farms, Salisbury Faire and numerous other venues. She is a founding member of the Des Moines Two Rivers Story Spinners, and also frequently offers workshops for adults and children to spread the joy of storytelling.
Neil Salowitz is a Midwestern transplant from Connecticut who now resides in Des Moines.
For more than 25 years, he has presented programs of original stories and international folktales to people of all ages at libraries, community centers, schools and churches.
A unique aspect of Salowitz's storytelling is the "Telling Your Company's Story" program that he developed for the corporate world, and also his "Telling Your Agency's Story," a program for non-profit agencies.
The Clear Lake Public Library sponsors this event which also provides opportunities for visiting storytellers to perform at Saturday's Story Exchange.
Story Exchange performers are allotted a maximum of 10 minutes, and their story content should be suitable for a family audience.
The Iowa Storytelling Festival is part of LakeFest, a community arts celebration that also includes the Art Sail of arts and crafts, and the Lakeside DixieFest music concerts.
The festival is funded by the Clear Lake Public Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library.
